The only thing I notices is vmware player is trying to add the disks as IDE when these are SATA disks. MAC OS, Linux System-ASMedia ASM1064 Non-Raid PCIE 3.0 SATA Controller (FS-S4-Pro) 4.5 out of 5 stars. Tried formatting the partition, same issue. Buy Monoprice 102530 SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SI元132) (102530): RAID Controllers - FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases. I tried no partition on the disks or create a raw partition, same issue. I have tried starting VMWare Player as administrator, same issue. I have tried making the disks offline and online, same issue. The drives have nothing on them, so I always chose to use the whole disk. Cannot open the disk 'C:\Users\HP\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu\Ubuntu-1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.". While I can add a physical drive through the VM Settings page, and I can see VMWare picks up the right drive and shows the right size, when I try to start the VM, I get this error I am trying to add the 4 disks to Ubuntu as raw physical disks, so I can play with Linux LVM features. The 4 drives show up as individual disks in Windows Disk Manager. The card shows up as Silicon Image SiL 3132 SoftRaid 5 Controller Chip Type SST 39VF020. I have 4 SATA drives in an external enclosure connected to the PC through eSATA to an eSATA card.

I used the easy install option and Ubuntu installed by itself with no problem. Everything is a fresh install from today. The host is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Service Pack 1, VMware Player version 5.0.1 build-894247 which is the latest as of today, and the guest OS is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop 32bit.
